Ready-made packaged Egyptian fava beans ( known as “canned foul medames” ) are a very common product in ethnic supermarkets and halal shops. Let me explain in a simple way:
What are Canned Egyptian Fava Beans (Foul Medames)?
• These are cooked broad beans (usually small or medium, called “foul”) that are ready to eat.
• They are stored in tins or jars, often immersed in water or a light brine.
• They are very popular in Egypt and the Middle East because they allow you to prepare the dish “foul medames” in just a few minutes.
How are they used?
1. Open the can and drain the beans (you can also rinse them under running water if you prefer a more neutral taste).
2. Heat them in a pan with a drizzle of oil and then season them as you prefer (lemon, garlic, cumin, tahini, etc.).
3. Alternatively, you can also crush them slightly to obtain a creamier consistency.
